The Rise and Furl of boat ownership
So, Jim, is it looking Furly nasty?
Yep furly. You can have some of your old unit rebuilt with parts coming in at around 12k USD and we have yet to hear about the expensive bits that haven’t been quoted. The leadtime is about a month (Oh Stuck!).
But there’s the Reckmann unit and that’ll be about 25k USD (what is it with the boat inustry; a new 103 inch Harley v-twin engine at the dealership here is just 3.5k USD!). But your hydraulic unit does not produce the flow rate required (several week’s leadtime uh oh….Stuck!).
A Selden hydraulic unit which is about as low as you can go with a matched flow rate is about $18k USD (3 weeks leadtime….mmmm…sounds like Stuck to me).
Or you could go manual with a Selden drum at about 7k USD, in stock, ready to go….about a day to fit.
You mean you can unstick me? Oh I have to lose my brand new forestay that we put on a few month’s back…
We went backstage to see the main man. Which way to go, hydraulic or manual. It’s a rough decision. But then comes a little light in the darkness as the main man says’ the Selden units can be upgraded easily later and you can add an electric or hydraulic motor to the fixture in place of the drum when you’re ready’. Now that’s why you have main men backstage!
So we are getting measured up for a manual system (which is really what we wanted for the Pacific) and at some stage we can revert to hydraulic if we feel the need. Our ETD is back on the board and we are looking at heading probably straight to the Azores in about a week’s time, all being well. But it’s only chalked up so can be changed at any time.
